Two photographs by Benjamin Arthur Gifford of views of Columbia River, Oregon, from the turn of the 19th century. The first is a black and white photo of a ship identified with text bottom left as being on "The Locks, Columbia River," with a ship floating along center. "Copyright 1898," bottom center, and photographer's logo bottom right says, "Gifford, The Dalles Or." Approx. 8" x 5" photo mounted on 8.25" x 5.5" black card. The second is a colorized photo of the Bailey Gatzert, a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Columbia River and Puget Sound from the 1890s to the 1920s. Text bottom center, "Cascades of the Columbia - Str. Bailey Gatzert. It was named after Bailey Gatzert, mayor of Seattle, who was a friend and business associate of John Leary – the person who financed the ship. 9" x 4". Gifford was one of Oregon’s most prolific commercial landscape photographers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From 1888 until his retirement in 1920, he was nationally known for his large-format, often hand-colored photographs of the Columbia River and its towns and people. [ Oregon 1898, 1902
