"The Story of Babar in the Forest," copyright 1933, Random House, Whitman Publishing Co. Vintage, original, softcover book about Babar the elephant king, by French writer & illustrator, Jean de Brunhoff. 14 pp. Thick paper pages are loose inside, apparently originally done that way. Penciled name & adhesive sticker on front cover. Slight fold line down left side of front cover. Bright colors, clean. 9.5" x 13". The Babar books began as a bedtime story that CÈcile de Brunhoff invented for the couple's two young sons who liked it so much they convinced their father, a painter, to illustrate a book. Originally, it was planned that the book's title page would describe the story as told by Jean & CÈcile de Brunhoff, but she had her name omitted. The book was successful & Jean wrote & illustrated five more titles before he died of tuberculosis at the age of 37. [
