Woven willow baby basket from the Northern Paiute Tribe of Northern Nevada. Outer frame and bracing are made from a bent chokecherry branch with traditional twine-woven willow backboard and a sunshade held up with two slanted supports. The arc of the sunshade is decorated with a geometric pattern of brown, yellow, and green woolen yarn woven into the willow structure, indicating this basket was designed for a girl. The edge of the sunshade is trimmed in buckskin decorated with a line of alternating blue and brown, 11/0 glass beads. The basket frame and backboard is wrapped in an Indian-tanned buckskin covering beautifully decorated with more appliqued beadwork and long leather fringe. There are red, white, and blue pony beads on every third fringe. The buckskin is held closed with buckskin leather ties. This baby basket is in excellent condition with little wear and tear. See photos for design details. Thanks to Norm DeLorme for description details.
