Desert District, N.T. (printed upper right). Dateline Virginia, N.T., January 15th, 1864. No. 22, issued for 25 shares to James Say. Signed by John Allman, president, and W.W. Coryell, secretary. Allman ran a livery stable and stage line out of Virginia City. He also lent Major Ormsby horses and supplies in the ill fated first Pyramid Lake Indian battle. Coryell was a (the) major mining secretary in 1864. Later he was a private detective in Virginia City. This certificate is not cancelled. Vignette of dog sitting next to safe and small vignette of eagle. Commercial Print, Virginia. 25 cent Power of Attorney stamp attached in the upper left corner. Folds, staining on left side. Not in Filer. Listed in the 1864 Collins Comstock directory as being in the Desert District, 1200 shares, Coryell secretary, and office at 45 South C. Street in Virginia City. The Desert Mining District was also known as the White Plains District. A 5 stamp mill was built there about 1863, but was unsuccessful, perhaps because of the isolation and lack of water. Most of the White Plains companies were financed by Eastern concerns. Additional information on the Coryell, Allman, mine and mining district is included.
