Nice, early date certificate #24, issued for 200 shares to Thomas E. Davis at Forest City, California in 1864. Signed by M. Redding as president and Wm. Hughes as secretary. Inc. in 1864. Forest City Mining District, Sierra County, California printed on the certificate. Located south of Downieville, Forest City is on Goddard's map in 1857. The camp was settled in 1852 and first named Brownsville, and later Elizaville. It became Forest City in 1854. In 1854, a lump of pure gold was found here weighing 42 ounces. Browne states that by 1869, only one company was working at Forest City, where formerly there had been twenty. In 1872 and 1873, the Bald Mountain claim was discovered and the town again prospered (Gudde). By 1878, the town swelled to 800 people. Bulletin 193, pp. 19 states that the Bald Mountain drift mine yielded $3.1 Million dollars. The certificate is pen canceled in 1869. State:California City:Sierra County Date: Provenance:
