Baldwin Locomotive Works, Illustrated Catalogue of Locomotives. M. Baird & Co., Philadelphia. Press of J.B. Lippincott & Co. c. 1872. Maroon boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. 134 pages. Has sixteen wonderful mounted albumen photographs, profile shots, of Baldwin locomotives. Begins with a 40-page historical sketch of the company. “In the following pages we present and illustrate a system of STANDARD LOCOMOTIVES, in which, it is believed, will be found designs suited to all the requirements of ordinary service.” Includes a 4-page insert for The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company. Personal copy of J.M. Brosins, 1876. Brosins filed patents for “utilizing steam” in 1867 and for car axle boxes in 1876. Clearly, he was a locomotive specialist. Baldwin engines roared across many of the great Western mining towns. Up to the time of this catalog, the Virginia and Truckee had Baldwin locomotives “Virginia,” “Carson,” “Comstock”, “Nevada,” “Humboldt,” “L.E. James,” “Washoe,” and “Reno” and used Baldwin almost exclusively for the rest of its lifetime. The Bodie and Benton Railway and Commercial Company’s locomotive “Mono” was a Baldwin built in 1874.
