# 230 for 4 shares issued to James(?) Justice trustee. Signed by secretary William Keighton and president Henry Wartin. Not cancelled. 25c Certificate revenue stamp. Dateline April 2, 1869. Chartered in Maryland in 1844!!! Eagle with "Formerly the Baltimore and Cuba Smelting Mining Co." draped around it.aPrinter A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore. Light corner fold upper left. Small discoloration on edge lower right. Overall in excellent condition. The Baltimore and Cuba had a smelter works running by 1845 at Locust Point in Baltimore. The plant was closed in 1851 and dismantled in 1854. A new find allowed the owners to built a new and bigger plant in 1855. In 1864 the Baltimore and Cuba purchased the rival Baltimore Copper Smelting and in 1868 formed the Baltimore Copper Company combining both operations. At the time this stocks was issued the copper industry in the east was undergoing very hard times. Congress passed large taxes on copper and put the squeeze on an already floundering business. The company survived, hower, late into the 1800's. Ken Prag Collection
