The company was chartered in Maryland in 1844. On the masthead, it notes, "Formerly the Baltimore and Cuba Smelting & Mining Company." Eagle is holding a ribbon stating the former name. Very unique. This is cert. #205, issued for 4 shares and signed by the company officers. Revenue stamp affixed at right in 1869. Copper has been mined in Cuba for hundreds of years, including the El Cobre mine, 9 miles West of Santiago de Cuba. Copper first was mined here in 1532 (mindat.org). This company started the Baltimore Copper Works, a smelting operation in 1844. Starting in 1846, the company began importing iron ore to the Baltimore smelter from Santiago, Cuba. The smelter was located on the north side of the block at 1600 Cuba Street near the North Main Terminal on Locust Point (A Guide to Patapsco Valley Mill Sites, James Walter Peirce, 2004). A.
