One share issued to Charles Little on March 28, 1793. Signed by Gordon Chapin as cashier. Rare. Numerous notations on the reverse as this stock was bought and sold etc. many times at least six through 1801. Names on the back include Gordon Chapin, Charles Little, David Stewart, Jonah Watson, Robert Beverly, John Thos Bowell, Ruth M Scott. Charles Little (ca. 1744–1813), an immigrant from Scotland, settled in Virginia in 1768. He purchased Cleesh, an estate in Fairfax County, southwest of Alexandria, and served as a militia officer. Little served in the Revolutionary War as an officer in the Virginia Continental line. As a colonel of the militia from Fairfax County, he later took part putting down the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania in 1794. Four years later, as part of the Fourth of July festivities in Alexandria, Colonel Little acted as George Washington's aide for a review of the militia on King Street. Little was one of three men who testified at the Court House in Fairfax to authenticate Washington's signature while the ex-President's will was being probated. In the 1790s, he frequently visited at Mount Vernon and he served as one of George Washington’s pallbearers.
