Lot of 2. 1) Stock dateline Plattsburgh, June 7th, 1817. No. 29, issued for 25 shares to Mordecai Myers. Signed by Alex. Scott, W.D. Ross, (illegible) Smith, and Peter Sailly. Not endorsed by Meyers. 5 x 6" Uneven left border, folds, some toning. 2) Sept. 10th, 1817 receipt for Myers paying $53.12 for 25 share of stock. Signed by Sailly as clerk. 4.5 x 7.5" Mordecai Myers was born in Rhode Island in 1776. During the War of 1812, he became a captain in the 13th Pennsylvania Infantry. General John Parker Boyd sent Captain Myers to Sacketts Harbor, where two boats loaded with more than 250 men and military supplies were wrecked. When he arrived to rescue them, he found the two boats were fast filling up with water and the crew in chaos. Risking his life, Myers and his men rescued more than 200 men and saved what was left of the military supplies. He was later severely injured in a different battle. After the War of 1812, he became involved in state politics (the first Jewish member of the New York State Legislature, 1828-1834); local politics (the only Jewish mayor of both Kinderhook, in 1838, and Schenectady, in 1851 and 1854); and national politics (candidate for U.S. Congress in 1860, at age 84). Myers was present when George Washington was sworn in as president in 1789. At Plattsburgh, Peter Sailly was active in the lumber business, owned several stores, and was a successful fur trader and potash manufacturer. Through the fur business, Sailly formed a longstanding friendship with John Jacob Astor. In 1804, Sailly was elected to the Ninth Congress as a Democratic-Republican, and he served from March 4, 1805 to March 3, 1807. During the War of 1812, Sailly was appointed keeper of the public stores, a position that gave him responsibility for all government warehouses in upstate New York. He also provided U.S. commanders with intelligence about the Champlain Valley and British troop activities in New York and southern Canada.
