A rare note from the safe of Purser Hull recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck in 2014. Bank of Syracuse, NY, $5, Haxby G12c. Haxby states "surviving example not confirmed." This note has all the elements that make currency collectors go wild: the artwork is fantastic, with intricate designs throughout. Condition problems abound, which one might expect from 160 years underwater, 7,200 feet deep. Several pieces missing, though nearly complete. Still very showy. Counterfeit $5 notes were found in circulation in February 1860.
