Early and rare stock from the Charleston, South Carolina branch of the second federally authorized Hamiltonian national bank. No. 2787, issued to Henry O'Hara of Charleston for 82 shares on April 5th, 1830 in Charleston. Signed by president Joseph Johnson and the cashier (illegible). Punch cancelled (tape repairs). Heavy toning, folds, holes lower left. 7.5 x 10" Transferred by O'Hara on the reverse. Printed by Fairman, Draper & Underwood. Joseph Johnson (1776–1862), physician and author. He was president of the Medical Society of South Carolina, 1808–09. He may be best known for his Traditions and Reminiscences chiefly of the American Revolution in the South (1851). Johnson was president of the Charleston branch of the Bank of the United States, 1818–25, intendant (mayor) of Charleston in 1826, and a longtime public school commissioner and steward of the South Carolina Society. This was the "Second Bank of the United States of America," founded in Philadelphia in 1816. As a private corporation with public duties, the bank handled all fiscal transactions for the U.S. Government, and was accountable to Congress and the U.S. Treasury. It was modeled on Alexander Hamilton's First Bank of the United States, which went defunct in 1811. The Second Bank was chartered by President James Madison in 1816 and began operations at its main branch in Philadelphia on January 7, 1817. By 1832, there were 25 branch offices nationwide, including this branch in South Carolina.
