This banner stone has two holes drilled; one side perforation is larger than the perforation on the other side. Indicating two sizes of drills were used. Otherwise called a Butterfly stone or Gorget. The stone appears to be a type of slate that has been polished. It is 3 in. X 2. in. (118 mm X 51 mm).The purpose of these stones is unclear; they may have been ceremonial or a good luck talisman for the wearer. These stones are rare to start, and even less are found outside the Great Lakes area. A large number of these stones have been found in Ottawa, Canada and were no longer in use by present day tribes; of the Archaic and Woodland Period. The location found was Van Wert County, Ohio. From the Bracken collection. Please see photos for details. (ref. Oklahoma Indian Artifacts p.52, 53; Prehistoric Implements, Moorehead 1983, pp. 118, 174, 220, 354)
