# 8 issue for 2003 1/3 shares. Signed by William H Barnum as president and sec. Dateline 1865. Industrial vignette. Mining vignette on the left side. Printed by BF Corlies & Macy. Not cancelled. Cut close on left. William Henry Barnum was an important industrialist in the 1860's. He started the Barnum Richardson Company with Milo Barnum Richardson, a nephew. It was the leading company in the Salisbury iron district of that time, owning or controlling iron mines, charcoal production resources, limestone quarries, and rail transportation. Barnum Richardson Company was also the preeminent manufacturer of railroad car wheels at a time when the railroad industry held a place in the economy analogous to the computer industry today. [Wikipedia] He partnered with Collis Huntington to form the Ensign Manufacturing Company which manufactured railroad freight cars. He is also known for defeating his third cousin P. T. Barnum for Congress. He would eventually become the longest serving chair of the Democratic National Committee. Great certificate signed by an important industrialist! Small perforation under cert. number.
