Barry & Patten is the oldest known western embossed whiskey bottle.* This quart-size bottle, late 1850's-early 60s, is embossed around the shoulder "BARRY & PATTEN/114 & 116 MONTGOMERY ST. SAN FRANCISCO" The olive-amber 11" bottle has no pontil on base, and unpolished bubble burst on the side.
There are reportedly three variants of this bottle. The most desirable is the full-faced embossed variant. All variants are exceptionally rare, and as the first embossed western whiskey, are in high demand and are impossible to acquire.
The saloon of Theodore Barry and Benjamin Adams Patten was an important fixture in the early history of San Francisco. Praise for their saloon was ever-present beginning in 1850. Benjamin Patten was born in Concord, Massachusetts about 1824 and died in San Francisco on November 7, 1877. With the death of Benjamin Patten, the doors of the famous saloon were shut forever.*
