Three fancy checks and a company letterhead from the Basic City Mining, Manufacturing & Land Co. of Basic City, Virginia. The checks are in two different formats but all dated 1890. Green underprints of a factory scene almost look like imprinted revenues. The company owned more than 2,000 acres on both sides of the South River and east to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Samuel Forrer was the company's president (James Madison University, Special Collections, online). The Basic City Mining, Manufacturing & Land Co. was founded by Jacob Reese, a Pittsburgh industrialist in 1890. The company owned some mineral rights in addition to the property and ended up selling lots as the town expanded. Basic City became a boom town in the early 1890's.
