Inc. in Virginia, 1889. No. 1381, issued in 1890. Signed by president Samuel Forrer and secretary Wess. Stamp and punch cancelled. Green border, black print, and 3 vignettes (mining and allegorical). Printed by Warderi & Co., Staunton, Virginia. The company owned more than 2,000 acres on both sides of the South River and east to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Samuel Forrer was the company's president (James Madison University, Special Collections, online). The Basic City Mining, Manufacturing & Land Co. was founded by Jacob Reese, a Pittsburgh industrialist in 1890. The company owned some mineral rights in addition to the property and ended up selling lots as the town expanded. Basic City became a boom town in the early 1890's. Named after a steel manufacturing process. Owner had sold most of the shares in days. By 1900, it was bust.
