This bronze medal was made by Jules Prosper Legastelois(1855-1931), in France, 1916. The medal commemorates the Battle of the Marne and honors the three French architects of victory : Marshal Joffre was Chief of Staff of the French armies, and Marshals Maunoury and Gallieni were charged with the defense of Paris. Reverse depicts a winged woman with sword over the battling troops on the ground. 67 mm. Fought September 6-12, 1914, the battle resulted in 160,000 dead soldiers, but halted the German advance toward Paris. Four years of trench warfare stalemate followed.
