Five different stereoviews of the Battleship Maine wreck and salvage, an event that greatly contributed to the start of the Spanish-American War. 1) Three are Keystone stereoviews, c.1898: 7050, United States Battleship Maine (pre-wreck); 9078--General View of the Wrecked Battleship Maine; and 9082--Divers in Full Dress on Wrecked Battleship Maine, Havana Harbor, Cuba. 2) Two others are Underwood & Underwood, both c.1898: The "Maine" Wreck from Merritt Wrecking Tug "Chief"; and American Divers at Work. The USS Maine sunk suddenly on February 15, 1898 in Havana Harbor, having been sent to Cuba to protect US interests in the Cuban War of Independence. The explosion was pinned, with the help of newspapers controlled by Hearst, on the Spanish. President McKinley sent a salvage investigation which concluded the cause of the explosion was an external mine. This is still being debated. Nice collection!
