Bausch & Lomb Abbe Refractometer in original wooden case in working condition. A refractometer measures the ability of a liquid to bend (refract) light passing through it, which is related to how much material is dissolved in it. The device is built somewhat like a microscope, but the stage is made of two glass prisms with their hypotenuses facing each other. A drop of the liquid of interest flows into the tiny gap between the prisms, held there by capillary action. Light is directed from the mirror at the base into the lower prism, passes through the liquid and into the upper prism which directs the light into the eyepiece column. The operator then incrementally rotates the prism assembly to center the edge between dark and light fields in the view. The index value is then read through a small reticle on the curved scale at the back of the device. This is a piece of precision manufacturing, and for many years it was the mainstay for determining the proportion of materials dissolved in a liquid solvent, such as aqueous sugar solutions, oils, and even blood serum. The prism assembly is then easily opened to clean out the liquid and prepare for the next sample. The device is quick and precise to use.
