This is the grand prize of Gold Rush Mining Certificates. c1851. Number 1635 for one share to AB Fagan (or RB Fagan). Signed by president VW Lorfeld(?) and secretary. Large oval with "Capital $650,000 Stock". The greatest to vignettes fills clarly 1/3 of the stock certificate. It shows white and Chinese placer miners working side by side. Also a logging mill, train, tents, etc. J Tyrwhitt camped here with a party in 1848. Oregon group was on their way south. They had started a Mormon Island (did well), then Webber Creek and then Bear River. Despite Indian hostilities he and his party of five well equipped companions took out 115 pounds of gold. The greater amount fell into the hands of highwaymen. The early mining company became very famous with “Four months among the gold-finders in Alta California was published by Brooks- one of the men in Tyrwhitt's company. Two editions were published in England, one translated and published in France and one in America. Quote from the Bancroft History of California “The Book is well written and the author’s observations are such as to command respect." This company and the American River Water & Mining Company lawsuit was the beginning of Gold Rush water law.

[This piece would go great with the "Wells, Fargo & Co Express; Rattlesnake to Dotan's Bar" elsewhere in this sale. Or with the Tuolumne Water Company stock certificate with the same vignette!] (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: c1851 Location: Bear River, California HWAC# 57472
