Unissued. 185-. "Connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co." Dateline Jacksonville, O.T. Black print on light blue paper. 4.25 x 10.5" CC Beekman opened his express office in 1856. He operated a bank and express messenger service. Beekman was a prominent historical figure in Southern Oregon, and the wealthiest man in Jacksonville. He made his income from substantial real estate holdings and a local mining operation. He ran as the Republican candidate for Oregon governor in 1878, losing by only 49 votes. Jacksonville was founded following discovery of gold deposits in 1851-1852. With the creation of Jackson County, it became the county seat, a role which was transferred to nearby Medford in 1927. Jacksonville was home to the first Chinatown in Oregon, founded by immigrants from San Francisco. Gold deposits were worked out in the 1860s. Jacksonville is a well maintained, old neighborhood town today.
