Stock Certificate from the Benton GMC of Colorado. Incorporated in April 1864 in New York. Certificate number 40 issued in April 13, 1864 at New York to CA Brooke. Signed by R Burlege(?), and F Capen. Size 9.5 by 7.5 inches. In fair condition. Not cancelled. 25c certificate revenue stamp. No vignette. Includes a Benton Gold Mining Co. letterhead. To CA Brooke from Secretary Capen about a first assessment. Brooke owes $125 before August 1865. According to Hollister, 1867, the company mined on the Gregory Lode, running 600 feet before crossing the Mammoth Lode on Mammoth Hill, and extending another 100 ft. Under the management of Jonathan Cox, they are sinking a 60 ft. shaft in Packard Gulch to access a vein 14 inches wide. They've encountered water and had to put in a six-inch pump. They also have machinery for a mill of 15 stamps and 6 pans at Atchison. More developments are described (see pg. 150-151).
