Unique and important early Comstock stock certificate. Number one for 4 shares issued Sep 25 1863 to Donald Davidson, signed by (President signature with diamond cutout) and secretary William Willis. Printed by Britton and Co SF, "Virginia Dist., Storey County, NT" Originally incorporated Nov. 24, 1862 and reincorporated Jul. 23, 1863. Donald Davidson & Co. is listed as being involved in "mining stocks and shippers ores" at 338 Montgomery St. in the 1863 Langley SF Directory.

This certificate is thought to be unique. It has a vertical tear through the center and another in the lower right half. Its edges have been adhered to a matte and appears to have been in a frame on a wall for decades or more. The piece was found in a San Francisco antique shop, thus the possibility it hung in a SF saloon or business office for a long period of time. It is the only such early Best & Belcher stock in existence.

The Best & Belcher sat at the center of the Comstock lode between the Gould and Curry and Con Virginia. The mine produced more than 36 million by WWII. This is a key piece, one of the very few territorial stocks from the important companies at the center of the Comstock lode. Stocks from the Gould & Curry during the 1863-65 period are scarce with only about 11 known. At the time of the issuance of this certificate mines on either side of this company had achieved great success. The reincorporation of the company was clearly an attempt to raise more money to drive the shaft deeper and expand drifting in the search for rich ore. By 1868 the Best & Belcher ground was connected to the Gould & Curry on the 339 level. The B&B 479 level drifted into Gould & Curry ground as shown on the King map, which would have caused trouble.
