Group of 6 "Big Little Books" about the comic character Chester Gump, published 1933-1937, varying condition. Big Little Books, compact storybooks with captioned illustrations, were published from the 1930s to the 1960s. They were conceived by Whitman Publishing Company but were later also produced by a number of other companies attempting to copy Whitman's success. The books were popular among children and collectors, especially in the pre-WW2 era.
This lot consists of 6 books (incl. 3 copies of the same book, 'Chester Gump at Silver Creek Ranch'), all following the character Chester Gump. 'The Gumps', the strip from which Chester originated, had an impressive 42-year newspaper run from 1917 to 1959. It followed the life and times of the Gumps, a middle-class American family, and was notable for popularizing continuous stories in newspaper strips.
All books produced by the original Whitman company. All have noticeable toning, some with significant spine wear; see photos.
