This Bill of Lading identifies Joseph C. Grubb as an importer of firearms in 1847 to the city of Philadelphia from Liverpool, England. It lists seven cases of guns including pistols and percussion caps. The city politicians feared that the city could easily be attacked from Virginia. Grubb would later be known for is support to protect the city of Philadelphia during the Civil War with imported guns. Abolitionists were vocal as early as the 1840's (Sherman, 1890). 10 in.
