Lot of four certified dollars: three from the Binion Silver Hoard: 1883-O; 1889; 1923 MS 64. From the Fitzgerald Collection an MS 63 1900 Morgan Dollar.

Benny Binion was involved in gambling and other racketeering activities in Dallas, Texas from around 1924 to 1946. In 1946 and just ahead of the law, Benny relocated his family to Las Vegas, where he became involved in gaming activities. In 1951, Benny purchased the El Dorado Club and Apache Club and opened them as Binion’s Horseshoe Casino.

His son Ted Binion worked different jobs in Binion’s Horseshoe Casino and became well-respected for his gaming knowledge. As he matured, he started associating with “undesirable” persons and eventually lost his casino license. This had a devastating effect on the younger Binion, as he loved the gaming industry and being part of the casino’s operations. When he permanently lost his gaming license he was forced to remove his silver dollars from the Horseshoe.

Things got worse when Ted met Sandy Murphy, a stripper in Las Vegas, and he became more dependent on drugs and alcohol. He died of a suspicious overdose and Sandy Murphy and her boy friend Rick Tabish were arrested for murder. Binion's coins were marketed by Goldline, Inc. in 2003 and were certified by NGC.

When Ron Gillio purchased the contents of the old Fitzgerald’s warehouse in 2003 he found a treasure of old roulette wheels, gambling tables, casino chips and slot machines. He also found over 100,000 Morgan and Peace silver dollars in bags piled in a corner of the building. Sensing the potential collector’s value of such a find, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was contracted to be the grading/authenticating agency and over 10,000 of the silver dollars received “hard / official” grades.
