District is on east side of Sierra Nevada mountains in northwestern Inyo County, approx 15 miles southwest of Bishop. Principal source of gold in the district has been the Cardinal or Wilshire-Bishop Creek mine, in production during 1900's and from 1933 to 1938. Estimated total production of more than $1 million. Ore deposits occur in a zone of quartzite enclosed in granitic rocks. There are bodies up to 8' thick and contain fine free gold and fairly abundant pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. Deposits developed to a depth of 600'.
