Kennett was an important copper mining town that was flooded by Lake Shasta when the Shasta Dam was built. The Diamond Saloon was founded by Victor "Slim" Warrens in 1904. It began a wooden shack only to burn down. By 1906, Warrens opened a new saloon with a mahogany, marble and walnut bar, lighting fixtures imported from France and ceiling murals. The structure grew to four stories with 40 rooms, a bar, restaurant and gambling. It operated 24 hours a day and employed 16 people on each of the three shifts. The fanciest place between San Francisco and Portland.
