Real photo postcard, unwritten, showing "Ty Stokes" at a California rodeo in Salinas July 1920. Stokes and Jesse Stahl performed a "suicide ride" on bucking broncs back-to-back as entertainment in the 1920s.In April of 1929, Stokes died of a heart attack at the age of 44. The Hayward Daily Review reported his death under the headline, "Noted Figure of Wild West Shows Rides Last Steed." The paper describes Stokes as "one of the most noted of the Negro riders in wild west shows between Cheyenne and the Pacific Coast. It was said of him that he could ride anything on four legs."
