Blackware deeply incised vase by Teresa V. Gutierrez. Avanyu and kiva step design, 5" h x 2.75" diameter. Teresa Gutierrez is a daughter of Rosita Velarde and the mother of potters Carol Velarde, Marie Suazo, Doris Tenorio and Tony Gutierrez, Jr. She is known for her distinctive style of carved pottery. Teresa says, "I decided to stay within tradition but carve the pottery a little deeper with straight line cuts then outline the design to give it a shadow box effect. This is different from other Santa Clara pottery. The pottery that (I) and my children make is unique….” The high polish and matte outlines are immediate signs of her work.
