Very rare pictorial assay piece. Assay Office of Blake & Co., 52 J Street in Sacramento, G. Blake and W.R. Waters. Deposit by D.O. Mills & Co. "Mixed dust" weighing 90.10 ounces, 0.885 fineness, worth a total of $1,583.02. Reverse has pencil notations. 7.5" x 8.5" Folds and some toning on folds, more evident on reverse. Blake is well-known in the collecting world for the ingots he issued. He came to California during the Gold Rush (1852) and worked for Adams & Company in Placerville and then Wells Fargo. By 1853, he had purchased and ran the Shaws Flat Ditch and had principal ownership in the Dardanelles Mine of El Dorado County. He moved to Sacramento in 1854 and opened an assay office where he issued ingots under the name “G. Blake Assayer.” He then formed a partnership with John Agrell in 1855 and they minted gold coins and ingots that were needed due to the limited operations of the San Francisco Mint. The partnership lasted only a few months before dissolving and Blake formed a new partnership with Waters. The two issued $20 gold pieces and ingots. Date: Location: Sacramento, California HWAC# 50940
