Inc. Dec. 2nd, 1871. Low certificate number 2, issued in 1871 to WG Schofield for 5 shares. Signed by president Kennedy and secretary Loveland. Not cancelled. Blue print. Deep folds with some discoloration. According to the Daily Alta, the company was formed "to mine for and trade in coal, and to deal generally in coal mines and coal mining interests in the State of Oregon." Our consignor argues it operated the Heckendorn (Blue Mountain) mine four miles east-northeast of Fuchs, Blue Mountain Mining District, Calaveras County, but we can find no proof of this. Small lignite (low-grade coal) deposits were discovered in Calaveras County, California, during the 19th century, particularly near Valley Springs and the Campo Seco area. These occurrences were limited and never developed into large commercial coal mines, but they were noted in early geological surveys and used locally for fuel.
