$1,000 bond issued July 1st, 1869. Signed by president J.W. Harrison and the secretary. Spindle cancel with tape repair. Important autograph is on the reverse: Henry Clews signs as one of 3 trustees. Clews was an American financier and author who co-founded Livermore, Clews, and Company, the second largest marketer of federal bonds during the Civil War. He also organized the "Committee of 70," which deposed the corrupt ring of William M. Tweed in New York City. He also served as an economic consultant to President Grant. Bond has both railroad and allegorical vignettes plus 40 coupons attached. Folds, some toning. The Blue Ridge Railroad was chartered in 1852 with the goal of a line that would stretch from Charleston, SC over the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, and then up to Louisville, KY and Cincinnati, OH. It was not successful. Date: 1869 Location: South Carolina HWAC# 63980
