Handcrafted in Germany, Meissen is one of the oldest and finest porcelain producers in the world, known for elegant and stylish porcelain products for more than 300 years. (founded in 1710) The bottom of this platter is marked with the Meissen 1934 - 1945 crossed swords mark. There is one other small blue mark on the bottom that may be the potters mark, but we were unable to identify it exactly. The number 64 is incuse on the bottom without color. The platter measures approx. 17" x 12.5" and 2" deep.
The Crossed Swords is one of the oldest trademarks in Europe and originates from the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. The trademark is applied by hand to every piece of Meissen porcelain in cobalt blue. The Crossed Swords were implemented into the onion pattern since 1888 as a method of authentication and a guarantee Meissen’s exceptional porcelain quality and craftsmanship.
Meissen's Onion Pattern was designed to be painted with the special blue color to emphasize the porcelain's perfect "whiteness". Cobalt was combined with oxygen to create a blue that was extremely heat-resistant. Beginning in 1722 Meissen’s trademark was applied in the special cobalt blue under the glaze to protect the trademark, making it difficult to duplicate. Inspired by blue and white Asian patterns, the Blue Onion Pattern was popular from 1731 to current day, and is known world-wide by Porcelain collectors.
This is a beautiful, antique, authentic Meissen blue onion platter with a slightly scalloped edge in excellent condition. No cracks or chips that we can see. A must have for any blue and white collectors.
