Lot of 2. 1) Incorporated in 1863. Unnumbered, unissued stock certificate but signed by Leland Stanford as president. Yellow ground with pink underprint. 11,100 shares. Vignette of two women in long gowns holding branches. In center of pink area is vignette of a mountain with house in the foreground and a road running past the house into the tunnel entrance. Written on the side of the mountain are names of 11 mines and depth in feet of each, all of the lodes at Bodie. I.e. 5.5 x 12.5 including stub. XF. Stanford was an important western financier, president of the CPRR, Gov. of California (1861-63), and US Senator (1885-93). This was the first consolidation of mines at Bodie, but failed for Stanford. [Ref: Browne, others.] 2) Handwritten document dateline Aurora Dec. 22, 1864. This Bodie Bluff Consolidated Mining Co. correspondence from Aurora Nevada is regarding a transaction involving 1459 shares of stock for the Bodie Bluff. Letter is written by F. K. Bechtel to Dr. J. L. Howard of San Francisco with reference to a third interested party by the name of James Stark. Signature of Dr. Howard on reverse. Plain paper, 25-cent revenue stamp, 6 X 8". Folded, light foxing.
