This certificate contains three prominent Bodie names. These certs are fairly common, but the Cain signature is unusual and important. Harvey Boone, Lester Bell and J. S. Cain. # 109 issued to Boone. Cancelled. Wrinkles and corner issues. Overall nice. J.S. Cain came to Bodie at the age of 25 looking to make his fortune in business. He built an empire one piece at a time. One of his first businesses was barging timber across Mono Lake to Bodie. Cain successfully ran mines, including being President of the Southern Consolidated Mining Co.; in 1890 he purchased the Bodie Bank from E. L. Benedict and began buying property around town. By the time California State Parks took over the town, the Cain family owned a majority of Bodie. Lester Bell was related by marriage and wrote a book on Bodie. Harvey Boone owned the store currently used as a museum. He also owned a livery business and the Boone Stable in town. Besides this store, he purchased Gilson and Barber’s Store and operated it at the same time. He had many interests in town, including being one of the five men who, in October of 1879, formed the Bodie Water Company.
