Pair of Wells, Fargo & Co. Boise Mines Frank Covers, with Bannock City, Idaho Territory Wells Fargo oval cancels. One bold, other a bit light. Extremely rare.

First: Red surcharge company frank (Haller WF-O6) on 3¢ pink entire, with large oval blue Wells, Fargo & Co. Bannock City, I.T. handstamp. Bold. Sent to Miss Hattie W. Stiles, Care of AG Stiles, 212 California St., San Francisco. Anson G. Stiles worked with S.A. Wood in San Francissco at a leather importing and goods mfg business. Scarce and an unusually choice example of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s surcharge frank for service to and from hazardous and remote regions of Idaho Territory. The cover is trimmed along left margin, imperceptible.

Second: Wells, Fargo & Co. Boise Mines Frank Cover, Bannock City, Idaho Territory. Extremely rare. Red surcharge company frank (Haller WF-O6) on 3¢ pink entire, with large oval blue Wells, Fargo & Co. Bannock City, I.T. handstamp. Sent to Joseph Lamar at Dalles (Oregon). This cover is interestig because of it being sent to Dalles (aka "The Dalles"), which was at the northern end of he Oregon gold region, and even had a proposed mint there.

The pair make an interesting group because of direct ties to Idaho, Oregon mining reions and the California supply houses.

Bannock City in Boise County was founded in 1862 during the Boise Basin Gold Rush. Near the confluence of Elk and Mores Creeks, its plentiful water supply allowed it to outgrow the other nearby camps in the basin, such as Placerville, Pioneerville, and Centerville. As its population swelled, the new Idaho Territorial legislature changed the town's name to ìIdaho City, to avoid confusion with Bannack, in present-day Beaverhead County, the southwestern corner of Montana.
