Lot of two pictorial. 1) Low No. 3, issued for 1897 to John E. Stearns, general manager of the railroad. Endorsed on the back by Stearns. Printed on blue cardstock with background silver gilt illustration of mountains. Some soiling. This is the first year of operation! 2) Low pass No. 20, issued for 1899 to W.H. Hurlburt (Oregon Railroad & Navigation Co.). Signed by Stiles as superintendent. Endorsed by Hurlburt. Printed on cardstock by Rand McNally & Co. Some wear on reverse. Construction began in 1896 with the ultimate goal of helping to serve Silver City mining interests. While reaching Silver City was impossible because of the climb above Snake River, the line created a path to the bottom where stages and freight wagons went the rest of the way to Silver City.
