This and the next two lots comprise a suite of three different Boley & Co. cobalt soda bottles. Iron & graphite pontils. This suite has two of the early variant with a small "c" in "Sac" City, as well as a small "l" in "Cal", very typical of early gold rush abbreviations. One variant has "Union Glass Works Philada" inside a slug plate on the reverse, and the other has a blank slug plate in its place. The third has a large "c" in "Sac" City, and was probably made in the later 1850's. This bottle also has the Union Glass Works designation on the reverse. The company got their start in 1849 by Addison and Lafayette Boley. They moved their operation a number of times during the first ten years, many because of the terrible floods that hit what is today "Old Sacramento". They were in business from 1849-1852, and are true Gold Rush '49ers, and one of the few bottles truly representing '49ers. The three bottles should be personally inspected. Two have been lightly polished and the third is "raw" with a small ice pick chip to the inside of the top. Don't expect a dead mint 1850's bottle. Its nearly impossible. Holabird Collection. Bottle 1 is the varient with the small "c" in "Sac" with no glass works shown on the back. This bottle is a beauty, professionally cleaned. 29867 City: Sacramento State: California Date: 1850's HWAC# 32612
