This marlinspike fidd is made of bone at 6.75 in. in length. A fidd is a sailor's tool for mending and splicing lines (rope). This one has a shoulder at 4 in. with a very sharp point. They are usually made of iron or steel and often found on sailor's knives today. This one shows spectacular craftsmanship with a hand knurled grip. No wear marks; likely a marlinspike sailor's gift before "swallowing the anchor" (retiring). Made of whale bone from the whaling era. c. 1850's.
