Two sided. 8 x 5.5" Horizontal fold, two pinholes, slight bend on bottom right corner. Overall in nice condition. Taken from the "State Geologist's' Report of the Gold Deposits of Georgia" by Yeates. In 1830, gold was discovered at Pine Mountain, near the future site of Villa Rica. Later the vein of gold was found to extend from the northeastern corner of the county to the southeastern corner. Some gold deposits were found near Carrollton on Oak Mountain, but the most important were discovered on the large plantation owned by Zadok Bonner, about eight miles southwest of Carrollton. The Bonner mines began operation about 1840, and more than a half million dollars in gold was removed before 1860, leaving the "Big Cut," 350 feet long and 20 feet deep, near the Bonner residence. The placer method was used to sift the dirt for traces of gold. Zaddock Bonner, Jr., was one of the wealthiest men men in Georgia before 1860. He discovered what became known as the "Bonner Bonanza" when he hit gold in Carroll County, Georgia. He was known to have been worth over three quarters of a million dollars before the "Civil War". Gold from his mine was used on the dome of the Georgia State Capitol. Georgia Carrollton
