1874. Hard bound volume of the Book of Mormon. Reprinted from the third American edition. First edition by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who were in California as part of the larger Mormon diaspora. Plano, Ill. Published by the RLDS.

This copy, according to the inscription in the back, was owned by C.A. Parkin. Charles A. Parkin (1847-1924) was branch president of the San Francisco RLDS when the 1906 earthquake hit. Afterwards, he said, "“It seems as if S. F. branch is broken up, so many have gone away. Everything we had was burned. . . . More than two thirds of S. F. branch lost their homes and the rest lost businesses.” This copy, according to correspondence from Parkin, was an earthquake survivor. 4"x 6 1/2." 545 pages.

The first edition of this essential text was published in 1830 by E.B. Grandin. Subsequent editions had two goals: reproduce the text faithfully and make it more accessible to new readers. Prior to 1874, the RLDS used an edition of the Book of Mormon published by James O. Wright (1858, New York), basically a reprinting of the 1840 Nauvoo edition. This 1874 edition follows the 1840 text and incorporates their own system of versification. Unlike the later LDS editions, all RLDS editions have retained the original longer chapters.
