Prices varied from a low of $101.50 in greenbacks to purchase $100 of gold early 1862 to $285 by mid-1864. Issued by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Printed by the Inquirer Book & Job Print. Approx. 29 pages (pages not numbered). Softcover. 5.75" x 4.5" Heavy soiling and tear to covers. Inside pages clean. Advertisements throughout. This booklet documents the period in 1869 and 1870 that Jay Gould and Jim Fisk took advantage of the disparity between gold and the greenback. In 1862 greenbacks (U.S. Notes) were issued to help finance the Union’s Civil War campaign. Over the intervening years the prices varied wildly since there was no tangible backing to the notes. At one time in 1864 the notes fell to almost one third of their value in gold. No copies found in institutions on OCLC. Date: Location: HWAC# 58509
