1885, Harpers, New York. The classic biography of George Custer by his wife.
Howes (980) reports two different issues of this work with the same pagination and imprint, but one has a map added on page 9. It is thought by some that the map only came with the brown hard binding, while the dark blue binding appears to be the version without the map, however, some brown bound copies offered on the web appear to be absent the map. Howes, nor elsewhere, seem to discuss that there are (at least) two different colored bindings and paper quality, each printed by Harper's in 1885. This brown version offered here has the map on page 9 (not a fold-out map). Of note, the paper quality in this brown version is of a finer nature. The blue bound version of a different lot here is of a thicker, coarser wove paper of apparent lesser quality.
Wear at spine ends, colors bright, old ink inscription in frontspiece and old light pencil inscription on page one of nineteenth century owner (easily removable).
