Stock Certificate from the Boulder. Left-Hand & Middle Park Railroad and Telegraph Co. Incorporated in Colorado. Certificate number 496 issued in c1880, at Boulder. Printed by Mills Engraving Co. Unissued stock certificate with a wide, central vignette of a land scene labeled Steamboat Springs and Bear River. Black ink on tan paper with perforations on the left edge. All edges intact and with no folds. "Left-Hand" was another name for Chief Niwot of the Southern Arapaho people who had lived in the Boulder Valley in the mid nineteenth century. "The Boulder, Left Hand and Middle Park Railroad was never completed. The company recorded land purchases between 1882 and 1890 with the plan to create a line to serve the gold camps of Left Hand Canyon and the ranches of Middle Park. Much of the route was surveyed, but only a portion along the base of the foothills was ever constructed. C.G. Buckingham, James P. Maxwell, James Ellet, Platt Rogers, and Henry Neikirk were the board of directors for the company. The route was to follow the hogback north to Left hand Canyon, west to Indiana Gulch, over Buchanan Pass to Middle Park. By spring of 1881, the grade was being constructed along the hogback, but by fall of 1882 alternate routes were being considered. The grade from Boulder to Left Hand Canyon was completed in the summer of 1883.... Additional survey for the grade was conducted in the summers of 1890-1892 before funding ran out. No additional grade was constructed and track was never laid on the grade which was built." (Ref: Cultural Resources of City of Boulder Open Space, North Boulder Valley by Gleichman and Phillips)
