Tells the story of Union soldiers (Boys in the Sky Blue Pants) stationed along the eastern boundary of California from 1861-1872. Outposts included Fort Tejon, Fort Miller, Fort Churchill (NV Territory), and Fort Yuma in the south. Deals primarily with one of the most desolate outposts, Camp Independence. Located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, the camp had "the Saline and Death Valleys as its front doorsteps."
