Very rare 1831 (21st Congress) and 1834 (23rd Congress) Assay Office reports from North Carolina and Georgia, during the beginning of the first US Gold Rush. There is discussion about the move to establish Mints as more gold is discovered across the South. 1834 has some edge degradation. Construction for the Charlotte Mint started in 1835, and it officially opened in 1837. The Mint mainly produced gold coins: $1, $2.50, and $5 gold denominations. Only eight design types of gold coin were minted in Charlotte. Coins minted there were struck with "C" to indicate where they came from. The branch of the United States Mint in Dahlonega opened in 1835, a decade after the nation's first gold rush brought thousands of miners into north Georgia, and its first coins were issued in 1838.
