Extra rare; we haven't sold this before. "Great Mogul District, Amador County, Cal." printed below title. No. 76, issued for 50 shares to Wm. Leffingwell in San Francisco in 1864. Signed by the president and secretary. Not cancelled. Small (3.25 x 7.25") stock with purple print and a vignette covered by two revenue stamps. Folds. The town of Mogul, in the Great Mogul District, was located two miles north of Monitor, 6 miles from Markleeville. At this time, Alpine County had not been created from Amador. Mogul was established in the 1860s to serve mines on the north side of Monitor Creek. The town had an elevation of 7000' and was situated on isolated Forest City Flat. The Mogul Lode "was first discovered by a Frenchman, in the fall of 1860, by the name of Cadwalder, and in the spring of 1861 he took some fine specimens of the croppings to San Francisco, and being under the impression that it would require five years to open the mine, disposed of his entire interest and sailed for his native land. His partner became insane on the strength of the old ledge, and, when last heard from was rusticating in the vicinity of the town of Stockton." (1864 June 25 Monitor Gazette)
