Pair of brass beer barrel taps, one about 16", the other about 8" The small one is marked "Ph. B." Both found in Virginia. The PhB tap is clearly the Philadelphia Brewing Co. of San Francisco, owned and started by John Weiland of Philadelphia in 1855. The Philadelphia Brewing Co. in Philly was a major brewery when Weiland was sent west to open a brewery for the company in 1855. The company was so big that they spent $50,ooo for the exclusive rights to sell beer at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The San Francisco operation was also a huge success, and in 1884 the entire plant was remodeled for $750,000. See lA herald, Aug. 17, 1888.
